Real and lasting community projects cannot simply be done for a community. They need to be done with the community. The people who live with a problem often understand it best, and their involvement helps make sure that a project is genuinely needed, properly delivered and supported by the people it is meant to help.

We start by listening. Before a project begins, we work with the community to understand the need first-hand. We speak with the people affected and confirm that the project is something they genuinely want and need, rather than something decided from outside.

The community helps to run the project. Important responsibilities are shared with members of the community so that no single person or organisation controls the whole process. A community representative acts as the main link between Root Impact Bridge and the community, while local monitors observe the work and report on both progress and any problems that arise.

People on the ground help verify the work. Because many donors may be far away, trusted community members can help confirm that materials have arrived and that the work has actually been done. This gives donors evidence of what is happening throughout the project.

Local knowledge helps shape the project. Contractors and suppliers recommended by members of the community may be considered when quotations are being obtained. This can help identify capable local people and ensure that contributions are used as effectively as possible.

We also protect the community. Privacy is important. We will agree appropriate safeguards with each community and take care when collecting and sharing project evidence. Images of children and other vulnerable people will not be shared, and photographs and videos will be used for transparency and accountability rather than unnecessary publicity.
